Widgit's Farm
We started keeping chickens in our back garden for a hobby as they are superb, productive pets, but they are very addictive and we found ourselves wanting a few more and to experience everything to do with Poultry. So we started to hatch our own not realising where it was going to take us!
We could not keep all the chicks that we started to hatch, handle and care for and so we started to sell a few to cover costs. But it got to the point that people came around and saw the chicks and took them all instead of a couple and asking us to contact them the next time we had a hatch.
Out of this hobby Widgits Birds came to be and since the start of 2009 Rachael has got to indulge in her hobby on a full time basis!Although we have expanded from just chickens into other areas and the smallholding now has all Rachael's chickens, Berkshire pigs, Beef Steers and Ryeland sheep! If you wish to visit the Smallholding, we are easily accessible being only ten minutes from Junction 12 of the M4, Reading.
The name of the business comes from our eldest Working Cocker Spaniel, Widgit. Used to being top dog and only having to look after Roxy the cat he was very put out with the first chickens (we think he thought they were Pheasants). Since then he has got worse and grumpier with every new arrival, as he feels it is his duty to sit and watch over them, especially when they first arrive, he sits, counts and watches them regardless of the weather or anything else. He is also excellent at keeping the the local foxes at bay. So with this in mind we thought it was only fair that we named it Widgit's Farm.

Please feel free to contact us via email or phone.
