How do I choose with so many breeds to choose from?
For First-time keepers there are alot of birds that should be discounted on the grounds of their unsuitability. Some breeds are very rare and hard to find, some are more difficult to manage for the novice, some may require extra time and care which you may not be able to afford if you have a busy lifestyle. Then there are breeds that are known to be nervous, often termed 'flighty' and are probably best avoided if you have a young family and perhaps, other pets. Even with these chickens eliminated you are still spoilt for choice.
The easiest way to help your decision is working out what you want from your birds:-
- A good supply of eggs,?
- A table bird?
- A dual purpose bird?
- An exhibition/show bird or for their ornamental value?
- The size of the birds for the space you have- little or large
- Even location where you live can play a part
- Temperament? Do you have young children?
- Pure Breed or Hybrid?
What age chicken should I buy?
This all depends upon your objective. If this is egg production then the optimum age is when the bird is approaching the point when it will start to lay. This is called 'point of lay' and sometimes abbreviated to POL. Hybrids will be 16-20 weeks of age, but Heavy pure breeds can be older.
It is best to buy your chickens when it is light and the chickens are out and about. A healthy chicken will be bright, alert and active during the day. Her feathers will be glossy, and if she is already laying her comb will be pronounced and bright red. Younger chickens, not yet laying eggs, have smaller combs which grow in size and colour. The legs should be smooth and if you pick her up she should feel firm not flabby.
